Kerala Police get 'Alco Scan Van' to test drunk drivers on the spot.

  Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police are now equipped with an 'Alco Scan Van' to screen for driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances. It will help law enforcement officers investigate the driver on the spot. Currently, the police have to take him to a medical center to do the test. The Alco Scan Van team tests the person's saliva. It is reported to be a state-of-the-art facility. Similar live test cars are used by police abroad. Kerala intends to install a bus for each district. The first, acquired with the help of Rotary International, inagurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

SEVERAL DISTRICTS IN KARNATAKA HAS YELLOW ALERT

  The meteorological department has activated a yellow alert for several districts of Karnataka including Bangalore and Belagavi. The incessant rains have brought life in the city of Bangalore to a standstill. The Karnataka government declared a public holiday for schools and colleges in Bangalore on Tuesday amid heavy rains. "Heavy rains caused flooding in different parts of Bangalore and several trees were uprooted on Monday.   Heavy rains hit central Kerala on Tuesday, forcing authorities to issue warnings to residents hit by the floods. Educational institutions have been closed in the affected areas while vigilance has been asked for local residents. District collectors have declared public holidays for schools in the flood-hit taluks in many of the state's central districts. Authorities are also making preparations to evacuate residents in flooded areas in the event of emergencies. The meteorological department warned that the strong wave is likely to continue for the next two days. Water levels in Kuttanad, the rice bowl of coastal Alappuzha district, rose as rivers flowing through the region breached its territory in many places.

In the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka, incessant rain has caused waterlogging and flooding in several areas. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, the floods have affected nearly 2. 4 lakh people in more than 1,000 villages in 22 districts.   All educational institutions in Pathanamthitta district and some parts of Kottayam district remain closed today following a yellow alert from India's weather agency. Pathanamthitta district collector Divya S Iyer said the holiday was declared after taking into account isolated heavy rains in the district, flooding, the possibility of landslides and rising water levels in rivers. However, scheduled university examinations are held. Schools and colleges in Kottayam, Changanassery and Vaikom taluks are closed on Tuesday. Educational institutions also remain closed in Kuttanad of Alappuzha . A yellow alert has been issued in all districts of Kerala except Kasaragod .
