International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2022: "Dignity for All in Practice"


International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17th. It is a day to raise awareness of the global problem of poverty and its violation of human rights and human dignity. The day also honors the courage of people living in poverty and their daily struggles. The real crisis does not end with lack of resources, but poverty has heartbreaking consequences such as homelessness, hunger, lack of basic services and violence. The United Nations is calling on people to come together and do their part to end poverty.

THEME

Theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2022 is "Dignity for All in Practice". The United Nations is calling on all people of the world to commit to fighting for social justice, peace and the planet. Human dignity is not only a fundamental right, but the basis of all other fundamental rights. But today, many people live in perpetual poverty, resulting in their dignity being denied or not respected.

According to the official UN website: “With a commitment to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people everywhere enjoy peace and prosperity, the 2030 Agenda again pointed to the same promise contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the current reality shows that 1. 3 billion people still live in multidimensional poverty, almost half of them children and young people.

On the event of the 35th anniversary of the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty and the thirtieth anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, this year, the UN honors humans dwelling with poverty and their each day braveness and increases attention on why international cooperation is vital to eliminate poverty.

HISTORY 

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty dates back to October 17, 1987 to celebrate the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. At the Trocadéro in Paris more than a hundred thousand people gathered . The Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948.

They declared poverty a violation of human rights and expressed the need to unite to remedy the situation. A memorial stone bearing these beliefs was unveiled. Replicas of this memorial stone have been found around the world where people gather every year on October 17th to commemorate the day.


The United Nations General Assembly, on December 22, 1992,  by resolution 47/196, declared October 17  as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.


SIGNIFICANCE


International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is marked by recognizing the efforts and daily struggles of people living in poverty and creating an opportunity for them to share their needs and concerns with the masses. Poverty is a global problem that requires global attention to end.
