Diwali/Deepavali 2022: History, Significance,and Importance

Happy Diwali 2022

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and falls on the day of 'amavasya', or new moon, in the Hindu month of Kartik. This year it is observed on October 24th, which is a Monday. The five-day celebrations begin with Dhanteras and end with Bhai Dooj. On the third day, people join Diwali or Deepavali celebrations together.

Associated with wealth and luck, it begins at the end of the growing season and heralds prosperity. It is widely believed that the festival is mentioned in ancient Sanskrit scriptures such as the Skanda Purana and the Padma Purana. While many celebrate it in commemoration of the return of Rama and Sita after 14 years of exile, others commemorate the return of Pandavas after 12 years of canvas and Agyatavas.

According to mythology, Deepavali is also mentioned as Deepapratipadutsava in the 7th-century Sanskrit play Nagananda, in which newly married brides and grooms received gifts and lamps were lit in commemoration of the marriage of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. According to legend, it is also associated with the story of Yama and Nachiketa in Kartika amavasya.

Preparations for Diwali, one of the most anticipated festivals in India, begin in early autumn. It is customary to buy gold and silver, furniture and household items, and to decorate their homes with diyas and rangoli. Lakshmi and Ganesh are also worshiped during Diwali. The grand five-day celebrations begin with Dhanteras, the festival of wealth, and are followed by Naraka Chaturdashi on the second day. On the third day people celebrate Deepavali and on the fourth day Diwali Padva, which marks the bond between husband and wife, is celebrated. Bhai Dooj, dedicated to the brother-sister relationship, marks the end of the festival.
