October 1st is celebrated worldwide as International Day of Older Persons. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly with the aim of recognizing the contribution of older people and discussing the issues they face . Older people make an important contribution to society by volunteering, passing on experience and knowledge and supporting their families in various tasks.
To ensure that people must age gracefully, the day aims to raise awareness of the issues affecting the elderly population, including senescence and elder abuse. There is no denying that older people make a great contribution to society.
Whether through their guidance, sharing of experience and knowledge, or volunteer work, the contribution they make cannot be repaid and as such they certainly deserve a day of celebration. Therefore, the International Day of Older Persons not only honors but also respects the contribution of older people in building society.
HISTORY
From helping their families look after their children to caring for the younger generation, society has benefited from them in many ways. In its Resolution 45/106 of December 14, 1990, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared October 1 to be International Human Day.
This comes after the World Assembly on Aging adopted initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging in 1982, and later that year also endorsed by the UN General Assembly. However, in 1991 the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons in its resolution 46/91. In response to the opportunities and challenges of population aging in the 21st century, the Second World Assembly on Aging adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action in 2002 on aging. This was also done in an attempt to promote the development of an all-ages society.
SIGNIFICANCE
This special day for seniors is of immense importance as it highlights the challenges of aging including health issues and elder abuse. International Day of Older People also aims to highlight the contributions of older people to our society. Each year the day is celebrated under different themes that highlight the important aspect of the day. This year, the theme of the day is the resilience of older people in a changing world.
Last year the day was celebrated under the motto ' Digital Justice for All Ages' which emphasized the need for older people to be active in the digital world. According to the United Nations, the majority of older populations in less developed countries do not have adequate access to the digital world.
