Every year on September 28th, World Rabies Day is celebrated worldwide. The day is celebrated to raise awareness of rabies and its prevention. Dogs are the animals most commonly affected by rabies worldwide. More than 99 percent of human rabies is caused by dog bites. World Rabies Day also honors the famous French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur, who died on September 28, 1895. Louis Pasteur developed the first effective rabies vaccine, which was first used to treat a human bite victim on July 6, 1885. This year the world is celebrating the 16th World Rabies Day.
World Rabies Day is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organization based in the United States. It is a celebration of the United Nations and has been supported by international human and veterinary health organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, the World Organization for Animal Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of US Diseases.
HISTORY
The rabies virus belongs to the order Mononegavirales, viruses with non-segmented negative-stranded RNA genomes. Within this group, viruses with a distinctive "spherical" shape are classified in the Rhabdoviridae family, which includes at least three genera of animal viruses. B. lyssaviruses, ephemeroviruses and vesiculoviruses. The genus Lyssavirus includes rabies virus, Lagos bat virus, mocola virus, Duvenhage virus, European bat virus 1 and 2, and Australian bat virus.
The Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) presented an idea to celebrate World Rabies Day. The main goal of the celebrations that day was the fight against one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world, known as rabies. The World Health Organization (WHO) supported the GARC target. The first World Rabies Day was observed on September 28, 2007. Since then, World Rabies Day has been celebrated on this special day every year.
SIGNIFICANCE
World Rabies Day is celebrated to raise awareness of the dangers of the dispublicease and ways to prevent it. All necessary equipment such as vaccines and medicines are available for the treatment of rabies. Still, people have failed and it is estimated that 60,000 deaths occur in a year from rabies. World Rabies Day brings together governments, NGOs and people from all over the world.The event is organized by GARC to educate people on the right steps to take to eliminate rabies in humans and pets.
Rabies vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent rabies. There are several safe and effective rabies vaccines. They can be used to prevent rabies before and for a period of time after exposure to the rabies virus, most commonly caused by a dog or bat bite.
THEME
The theme for World Rabies Day 2022 is Rabies: One Health, Zero Deaths. This year's theme highlights the connection between the environment and people and animals. The goal is to eliminate dog-caused human rabies worldwide by 2030.
