Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi is celebrated every year on September 21st in Kerala. It is a regional holiday commemorating the anniversary of the death of the spiritual leader and social reformer who died on this day in 1928.

In addition to operating for the empowerment of human beings in Kerala who have been oppressed because of caste prejudices, he immersed himself in meditation practices for non secular upliftment.

History

Sree Narayana Guru was born on August 28, 1856 (a day also celebrated as a public holiday in Kerala) in Chempazhanthy,  Thiruvananthapuram, a tiny village in  Kerala, to Madan Asan and Kuttiyamma. 

He was the catalyst and leader of the reform movement against the oppressive caste system then prevalent in society. His philosophy was based on social equality, education for all and spiritual enlightenment. Born into a family of the Ezhava caste in the former princely state of Travancore in British India, he received an early education in Sanskrit, literature and the Upanishads. , and the Vedas. 

He founded a school for local children in his village. He soon left his village to travel the length and breadth of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. He learned meditation and yoga from Ayyavu Swamikal, who was also a spiritualist and social reformer. Sree Narayana Guru then established a hermitage in Maruthwamala, Tamil Nadu where he spent the next 8 years in yoga and meditative practices. In 1888 he visited the village of Aruvipuram in Kerala and dedicated a piece of rock he had taken from the river to the image of Lord Shiva, which was to be the first temple in which an idol was dedicated by a non-Brahmin state , Kerala. 

This started the anti-caste revolution against the Brahmin communities of the higher castes. Later in 1903, the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) was established here with Narayana Guru as its founder and president. The organization continues to this day with a strong presence throughout the state of Kerala. In 1904, Sree Narayana Guru opened a school in the town of Sivagiri, Kerala for children from the economically disadvantaged strata of society, regardless of caste, which offered education completely free of charge.

A temple, Sarada Mutt, was also built there in 1912. He also built and dedicated temples in other parts of Kerala, Karnataka and Sri Lanka. Sivagiri's famous pilgrimage was planned upon his return from Sri Lanka in 1926 and it continues to this day. In 1923 he planned and organized the first conference of all religions in India. This took place at the Alwaye Advaita Ashram.

This event continues to be held at the Ashram every year. His message for the event "We are not gathered here to debate and win, but to know and be known" will be taken as the basis for all future events. Sree Narayana Guru had met Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi in her life. He died of a chronic illness at the age of 73 on September 20, 1928 in Sarada Madam.

Literary Works 

The most famous work of Sree Narayana Guru is the hundred verse spiritual poem called Atmopadesa Satakam. It is also known for a universal prayer of 10 verses called Daiva Dasakam. There are 45 published works of the Guru in Malayalam. , Tamil and Sanskrit. He also translated three important spiritual texts.

Spiritual Motto

The most famous motto of the Guru is "Oru Jathi, Oru Matham, Oru Daivam, Manushyanu" which means "One Caste, One Religion, One God for All" and is still the social and spiritual motto in Kerala to this day. today. 

Commemoration

Commemoration of Sree Narayana Guru was honored on postage stamps by the Governments of India and Sri Lanka. To commemorate his 150th birthday, the Reserve Bank of India issued two sets of coins.

There are several statues of the Guru in Kerala, from the one at Jagannath Temple in Thalassery to the one at Kaithamukku which is 24 feet long.
